• Following the recent problems faced by the Wakefield Pride Not Prejudice Committee the organisers of the past 4 highly successful gay pride events in Wakefield City Centre it is looking unlikely that a pride will happen in the precinct this year. After listening to many of the communities different thoughts and opinions on this the one common feeling was that it would be a shame to loose Wakefield Pride after 4 years of hard work making the 2nd Sunday of August a day to remember and enjoy.

With little over 4 months to go before August the 9th (the date this years event should fall on) The New Union have decided that they can not sit back and see the day pass without a pride event and have therefore taken the decision to support the community who have supported them and made them so welcome in Wakefield and take this years event under their wing by organising and funding the whole event.

The main aim of this year will be to remember and recognise what a pride event should be about and that is to raise money for charity. The money raised will be split between Yorkshire Mesmac & local youth group The Fruit Bowl. Of course a pride wouldn’t be a pride without top class entertainment from local and national talent, community information and commercial stalls and general partying so naturally The New Union plan to provide all this and more round on Southgate (The road The New Union is on). The New Union hope to work with other local bars to be able to provide an even bigger line up of entertainment and also look forward to being able to hand back the organising of the 2010 event to an independent community based committee.
